The Ensigns by OrlopRat The Ensigns by OrlopRat
Ensigns and the Regimental Colours of the 57th Regiment of Foot, c. 1775.

This is actually a detail of a much larger work of mine which at this time I'm unable to reproduce of due to it's size. But I think the cropping I had to do has made for a more interesting composition.

Medium: Pen and ink, watercolor.

Ah, the color-guard. The heart of every 18th-century army formation! This is a very nice painting. Would love to see the whole picture, though.

Indeed, the Die Hards of Albuhera. "Die Hard 57th, Die Hard!"

I was inspired by a line in the old Regimental song,

"As fearless of danger, right onward we go,
When up go our colours and down go the foe...

...Watch the girls, how they smile when we march through a town,
When they hear we're the Die-Hards of far famed renown,
So fill up your glasses and show your regard
By drinking the health of each jolly Die-Hard."

During the War of American Independence the 57th were for a time part of the New York garrison, and were encamped very near my home in Flushing, N.Y. :)
